We all suffer from stress in our lives at some point. It can even be a good thing as it can get our adrenaline going, our creative juices flowing, and our bodies and minds in motion to find solutions. However, stress can be a huge burden if it is lingering and growing. A person can suffer both mentally and physically from too much stress. It is like a huge weight that is on the shoulders zapping the life and excitement out of someone.
Getting a handle on stress can take time. Identifying what is causing it is the starting point. There are areas of stress that can be changed and those that can’t. For example if you are stressed about your weight you can create a plan of action. You can get a check up from the doctor, develop a good eating schedule and diet, and get daily exercise. Soon you will see those pounds coming off and your stress will drop.
For others though there is stress that seems to be never ending. One of those big concerns in our society right now has to do with the finances. The cost of everything seems to be increasing but for many people the amount of money they have left over is decreasing. With high unemployment rates out there people are struggling to make ends meet.
Still, identifying the problem and talking about it is important. Some people will be able to turn to friends or family to get the support they need for dealing with stress. Others will need to talk with professionals. This is especially true if you don’t really know what the cause of all that stress really is.
For example a person may feel overwhelmed all the time due to stress. Yet they can’t put their finger on it. For many it has to do with a personal relationship that isn’t going well, they aren’t doing well at work, or maybe they have too many responsibilities so they simply feel overwhelmed.
Taking time for yourself is a big step in reducing stress. Even 30 minutes a day of quiet time to reflect can be very useful. If you like to write then jot down what your thoughts are. Don’t worry about organizing them and don’t scrutinize them. Just allow those thoughts to flow freely and to write them down. You will find that you feel better just by doing so.
Exercising is another great way to help you reduce stress. Don’t say you don’t have time because we can all carve a bit of time out of the day to get some exercise. It is for your health and to reduce stress so make it a priority. You can also take part in low impact exercise including yoga and meditation because they are both great stress busters.
Don’t rely on alcohol, drugs, or other forms of self medicating to handle stress. It is a problem that will continue to grow if you ignore it. Communication is a great benefit so find someone you can trust to talk to about all of it. Be honest with yourself too so that you can get rid of that burden of stress and have a happier future.
